MICROSORUM PTEROPUS – Java Fern for Freshwater Aquariums, Ideal on Wood, Rock, or Decorative Coconut Shells
Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java fern, is a hardy and versatile epiphytic plant native to Southeast Asia. In the wild, it grows attached to rocks and wood in fast-flowing rivers and waterfalls, using its strong root system to anchor securely. To mimic its natural habitat in the aquarium, it should be mounted on natural supports such as driftwood, porous stones, or coconut shells.
Coconut halves with entrance openings are especially popular as natural shelters for fish and invertebrates. When paired with Microsorum pteropus, these structures provide both functional hiding spots and natural aesthetic appeal. This fern adds texture and vertical movement to aquascapes while improving environmental enrichment for tank inhabitants.
Reaching up to 40 cm, this slow-growing fern is highly adaptable and thrives in a wide range of water conditions, temperatures, and lighting levels. It requires no substrate, CO₂ injection, or heavy fertilization, making it ideal for low-tech or beginner-friendly setups. Propagation is simple, as it produces daughter plants on mature leaf surfaces.
