MICROSORUM PTEROPUS – Java Fern on Root Wood with Suction Cups for Freshwater Aquariums

Microsorum pteropus, also known as Java fern, is one of the most popular epiphytic aquarium plants, here mounted on a natural root wood piece equipped with suction cups for direct attachment to the aquarium glass. This decorative and practical format allows aquarists to create striking vertical scapes, especially in smaller tanks where the wood appears as sunken tree trunks projecting into the aquatic world.

Native to Southeast Asia, Microsorum pteropus grows slowly up to 40 cm and thrives when attached to wood or rock surfaces. It should never be buried in the substrate—its rhizome must remain exposed to avoid rot. It tolerates low to medium light, does not require CO₂, and adapts well to a wide range of water parameters, making it perfect for low-tech setups.

Like Anubias, Java fern benefits from occasional pruning: larger leaves can be trimmed irregularly to control its spread, and full pruning encourages bushier regrowth. Propagation is easy, with daughter plants sprouting from leaves or root structures.
