NO2/NO3 PRO
Nitrate ions (NO3–) are derived from ammonium (NH4 +) as the end product of nitrification. The first partial stage of this bacterial process includes nitrite (NO2–), which in large quantities is poisonous especially for freshwater fauna. If the nitrification process is successful, the nitrite is converted into nitrate in the second stage, which is comparatively non-poisonous. High nitrite values above 0.05 mg/l are found especially in tanks in the running-in phase or in tanks with nitrate filters.
Nitrates affect the water quality in the aquarium: In marine aquariums, high nitrate concentrations cause damage to the growth of sensitive corals. For all aquariums, one of the dangers arising from the high nitrate content is constantly strongly promoting the growth of algae. In some reef aquariums, extremely nutrient-poor conditions are present - in such cases, nitrate deficiency conditions may eventually arise. For this reason, the nitrate concentration of the aquarium water should be checked regularly.
In freshwater aquariums, nitrate levels of less than 50 mg/l are recommended, while in saltwater the concentrations should not exceed 20 mg/l. For the care of the required scleractinians, aim for nitrate levels of less than 10 mg/l. The minimum limits for nitrate depend on the general conditions in the aquarium.
