Tests for measuring ammonium and ammonia levels in freshwater and marine aquariums

Ammonia (chemically abbreviated as NH3) is a waste product of fish, which expel it through their gills and urine; it is harmful to all aquatic life and therefore it is very important to keep the level at almost zero.

An optimal ammonia content in all types of water is simply 0 mg/l. When ammonia is 0.5 mg/l or higher, it means that there are not enough bacteria and therefore it is advisable to add a bacterial activator.
