The right pH value is essential for the health of fish and plants; it is normally between 6.2 and 8.2.
Sudden pH fluctuations cause both behavioral and physical changes in fish; these fluctuations are often caused by too low KH (carbonate hardness) values. It should also be remembered that pH is related to the toxicity of Ammonia/Ammonium.
What is it
The pH represents the concentration of hydrogen ions present in the water. The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, the central value 7 represents neutrality, below 7 the water is defined as acidic, above it is basic or alkaline.
How to do the test
1. Rinse the test tube repeatedly with the water to be analyzed.
2. Fill the test tube with 5 mL of water to be analyzed.
3. Add 5 drops of pH reagent and shake the test tube for a few seconds.
4. Determine the pH value by comparing the color of the liquid in the test tube with that of the supplied color scale.
