Calcium is one of the main chemical elements contained in seawater and is assimilated in large quantities by fish and invertebrates, especially by shellfish and corals for the construction of their skeleton.
A calcium deficiency can cause stunted growth of many organisms, including calcareous algae. In reef aquariums it is recommended to regularly measure the amount of available calcium, which should be maintained between 420 mg/L and 460 mg/L
