FRESH WATER POTASSIUM TEST
The JBL K Test Set Kalium is used for the regular measurement and monitoring of
the potassium content in freshwater aquariums in the range
of 2 to 15 mg/l (ppm). In saltwater, potassium is present in
concentrations of approximately 390 - 400 mg/l, but is only consumed in very small quantities. In this case,
too high a potassium content can pose a danger to sensitive
animals such as shrimp.
Potassium is one of the macro elements that is taken up by freshwater
plants very quickly and efficiently within a few hours and then
stored temporarily. Growing plants have a high requirement for
potassium compared to other elements. Despite regular fertilization
(e.g. weekly) of the aquarium, potassium can therefore drop to
minimum values and plants stop growing. Unlike natural biotopes, tap water is low in potassium, especially compared to the
concentrations of calcium and magnesium. We recommend starting with a daily
measurement of the potassium content in your aquarium water.
This way you can determine the needs of the plants and adjust the
dosage of the fertilizer accordingly. You can then move on to regular
measurement over longer periods. For good plant growth, the value should be between 5 and 10
mg/l; in aquariums with strong lighting, i.e. from 1 W/l of illumination,
the value should be between 10 and 20 mg/l. Higher levels of potassium in the
aquarium water promote the growth of green thread algae.
