Phosphate has several negative effects if present in too high a concentration. First, there may be unwanted algae growth. Making the aquarium an unpleasant sight.
Phosphate also blocks or retards the growth of corals and calcareous algae.
A scientific study shows that a phosphate concentration above 0.05 mg/l reduces the growth of calcareous algae by 90%!
Washing fish food, which is a rich source of phosphates, in a sieve after thawing greatly reduces your phosphate intake. Additionally, avoiding the use of low-quality, phosphate-rich activated charcoal helps keep phosphate levels as low as possible. It is therefore strongly recommended to check the presence of phosphates in activated carbon before use.
Conclusion:
Since phosphate can have serious consequences if present in a concentration above 0.05 mg/L, a test kit should be able to detect even lower concentrations.
