MICROSORUM PTEROPUS – Epiphytic Aquatic Fern from Asia for Freshwater Aquariums
Microsorum pteropus, also known as Java fern, is one of the most popular epiphytic plants in aquascaping due to its hardiness, low maintenance, and decorative appeal. Native to Asia, this aquatic fern grows to a height of 15–30 cm and adapts easily to various aquarium layouts, from simple setups to complex natural scapes.
It must be attached to hard surfaces such as driftwood or rocks using fishing line or thread until it develops anchoring roots. It should never be buried in the substrate, as its rhizome will rot if covered. Java fern thrives without CO₂ or heavy fertilization, making it ideal for low-tech tanks and beginners.
Propagation is simple by horizontally dividing the rhizome and reattaching it to new hardscape elements. Its narrow green leaves may display black dots on the underside—these are sporangia (reproductive structures), not signs of disease. Under strong lighting, its coloration becomes more vibrant and intense.
