LOBELIA CARDINALIS – Decorative Marsh Plant with Scarlet Flowers

Lobelia cardinalis is a North American native plant known for its upright growth, striking coloration, and remarkable adaptability. In nurseries, it is grown in marshy conditions where it develops dark green leaves with purple undersides. When submerged in an aquarium, its foliage turns a vibrant light green, creating a strong visual contrast and adding a refined, natural touch to any aquascape.

With a compact, upright growth habit, Lobelia cardinalis reaches heights between 10 and 30 cm and spreads about 5 to 10 cm wide. It thrives under intense lighting, which enhances its coloration and keeps its form well defined. Frequently used in Dutch-style aquariums, it’s ideal for creating orderly plant arrangements or the famous “plant streets”.

In open-top tanks, this plant can grow above the water surface, where it produces spectacular scarlet flowers. During this emergent phase, the leaves regain their original green-purple tones, making it an impressive ornamental feature both underwater and above.
