Iron is a key element for the health and growth of aquatic plants, essential for chlorophyll production, which enables photosynthesis. Without an adequate iron supply, plants suffer from yellowing leaves and loss of vitality (iron deficiency chlorosis).
In aquariums, only ferrous (bivalent) iron is absorbable by plants, but it quickly oxidizes into ferric (trivalent) iron, which is no longer available. Additionally, tap water contains almost no iron, making regular fertilization essential for healthy plant growth.
