Magnesium, together with calcium, forms the total hardness. Magnesium is, together with potassium, one of the macro elements that corals need for healthy and strong growth. Too low calcium and magnesium levels impair coral growth and prevent the growth of beautiful red calcareous algae.

In recent years, we have noticed that our magnesium test with factor 100 indicated too little magnesium. On exploratory expeditions in “original marine water”, however, the exact values were still measured. From this we concluded that the reaction described above only occurs in artificial sea water.
We have therefore carried out extensive tests with various commercial salt mixtures. The difference compared to the original sea water was due to the magnesium salts and trace elements recently used in the sea salt mixtures, which caused a deviation of about 20-30%. As a result of these tests, we have changed the instructions for use by increasing the multiplication factor from 100 to 120, adapting it to the sea salt mixtures currently on the market. This means that with artificial sea salts, correct measurements can be made with the factor 120. With natural sea water, the factor 100 continues to be used.
