AEGAGROPILA LINNAEI – Decorative Algae Ball for Freshwater Aquariums
Aegagropila linnaei, also known as Cladophora aegagropila or Marimo, is a unique spherical algae formation ranging from 3 to 10 cm in diameter. Though not a plant, this naturally occurring algae ball is a striking addition to any freshwater tank.
In the wild, it forms in shallow lakes with minimal water movement. In aquariums, it helps absorb excess nutrients, thereby limiting unwanted algae growth. It can be placed on the substrate or attached to driftwood or rocks, eventually spreading into a lush green carpet if desired.
To maintain its round shape in aquariums, rotate the ball regularly by hand. Completely safe for fish, shrimp, and invertebrates, it is also low maintenance and grows very slowly.
Key features:
Natural algae sphere, 3–10 cm in diameter
Helps reduce algae by absorbing excess nutrients
Can be divided or flattened to form moss-like carpets
Low maintenance, ideal for beginners and shrimp tanks
Safe for all aquarium inhabitants
Why choose it:
A functional and decorative natural element that enhances water quality and adds visual interest to your freshwater aquascape. Perfect for low-tech tanks and aquariums with invertebrates.
