Exo Terra Bioactive Volcanic Substrate is harvested from the mineral-rich volcanic skirts of the Aso volcano in Japan. The naturally formed volcanic soil of andesite and rhyolitic tefra is very rich in nutrients, ideal for lush plant growth in planted Bioactive terrariums.
The porous surface allows for excellent drainage and aeration, encouraging strong root growth. The crumbly and low density of the Exo Terra Bioactive Volcanic Substrate structure promotes a growing population of beneficial and nitrifying bacteria, creating a living and self-sustaining terrarium ecosystem.
Beneficial active bacteria in the substrate decomposes biological waste, keeping the terrarium clean and healthy.

When using Exo Terra Bioactive Volcanic Substrate as a single substrate, add a 1-2 inch thick layer to the vivarium. Live bacteria are activated when substrates come into contact with water or debris. Organic matter, such as food scraps and animal waste, decomposes over time. The absorbent properties of volcanic ash eliminate odors by trapping decomposed materials. Rinse Bioactive Volcanic Substrate and partially replace it every 12 months. the
As a drainage layer
Add a top layer of Bio Substrate over the Exo Terra Bioactive Volcanic Substrate layer for bioactivity and drainage. Plants can be fixed in the top layer (e.g. Exo Terra Plantation Soil), while their roots thrive in the sublayer Bioactive Volcanic Substrate, resulting in optimal growth.
Additionally, you can add an inorganic layer for better drainage (Exo Terra BioDrain) before the bottom to allow excess water to flow through the substrate, preventing saturation and anaerobic bacteria from destroying beneficial bacteria in the Bioactive Volcanic Substrate. Use BioDrain mesh to separate the BioDrain drainage layer from organic matter to prevent it from entering the layer below. Use
a top layer of litter to provide dry surface areas, shelter and housing for all organisms in the terrarium, while at the same time preventing evaporation of the layers below.
