In their natural habitat, the streams, puddles and marshes of the tropics, aquatic plants rarely cover large areas but mostly grow in small groups in small areas.
In these places, according to experience, there are so-called elocrene nutrient sources, i.e. areas in which water rich in nutrients and CO2 slowly but steadily flows out of the ground.
It is still little known that the numerous mineral nutrients in tropical soils can only be transformed into a form usable by plants by humus-living bacteria and the humic substances they form.
In the bare soil of the tropics – for example at the edges of new roads – plants only establish themselves again after a humus layer has formed, even if it is only a few millimetres thick.
The soil in the natural habitats of our favourite aquatic plants, such as Cryptocoryne and Echinodorus, is very rich in humus.
In the course of several years of experiments, the aquarium plant division of the DENNERLE company has developed a long-lasting, humus-rich mineral substrate material especially for aquariums.
