Ammonia, chemically abbreviated to NH3, is a waste product of fish, excreted through the gills and urine.

Ammonia is very toxic to all aquatic life and therefore it is very important to keep the level at 0.

If the pH of the water is less than 7 you will have ammonium (NH4), less poisonous than ammonia but just as dangerous.
