TEST KH

ASKOLL TEST KH

Kit consisting of:

  • 1 graduated test tube
  • 1 10 ml bottle of KH reagent
  • the package leaflet

What is carbonate hardness

Carbonate hardness (KH) is an improper, but now familiar, term to indicate alkalinity, which represents the ability of water to neutralize acids. In freshwater aquariums, the ideal KH value depends greatly on the type of aquarium set up; in planted aquariums, the typical value varies between 3-5° KH. In marine water, KH is a very important factor for coral growth; in reef aquariums, typical values are 10-12° KH.

Why measure it

Carbonate hardness stabilizes pH and is an important source of carbon for nitrifying bacteria.

How to do the test

1. Rinse the test tube repeatedly with the water to be analyzed.

2. Fill the test tube with 5 mL of water to be analyzed.

3. Add 1 drop of KH reagent and shake the test tube, the solution will turn blue. The number of drops needed to turn the solution from blue to yellow will indicate the amount of KH degrees in the water. If the water in the test tube turns yellow at the first drop, it means that the carbonate hardness is less than or equal to 1° KH.
