CA/MG PRO
Calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) are among the main components of natural sea water together with sodium, potassium, chloride and sulphate. For living beings that form a calcareous skeleton, such as e.g. scleractinia and coralline, magnesium and especially calcium are important growth factors – both elements form the basic substance of the calcareous skeleton. Furthermore, magnesium and calcium are involved in the carrying out of numerous biochemical processes. In seawater aquariums, the reduction of the concentration of magnesium and/or calcium, on the one hand through cellular metabolism and on the other through the formation of the skeleton, requires regular monitoring and possibly the addition of both ions. This way it is possible to ensure optimal and natural living conditions for all living beings and avoid long-term damage.
In natural sea water the calcium content is 400-410 mg/l and the magnesium content is 1280-1320 mg/l and between them they are in a fixed ratio of 1:3.25. Due to the chemical and biochemical interactions between calcium and magnesium, this concentration ratio should also be aimed for in seawater tanks.
