MONOSOLENIUM TENERUM – Tropica 1-2-Grow! Aquarium Plant, Cushion-Like Foreground Alternative to Riccia

Monosolenium tenerum is a slow-growing liverwort with a unique appearance, often mistaken for Riccia fluitans but featuring broader, fleshier leaves that form compact green cushions on the aquarium floor. Commonly known (and misidentified) as Pelia, this plant naturally rests on the substrate, creating dense mats 2–5 cm in height that give the layout a soft, moss-like texture.

Although low maintenance once established, Monosolenium tenerum is delicate and easily breaks apart when handled. It’s best secured to small stones with fishing line or nestled between fine-leaved plants like Eleocharis to encourage rooting. Offered in the sterile 1-2-Grow! format by Tropica, this plant is guaranteed free of snails, algae, and pesticides—completely safe for shrimp, ornamental fish, and sensitive invertebrates.

Main features:

  • Liverwort plant with soft, thick leaves and slow growth

  • Grows into natural-looking mats 2–5 cm high

  • Stays rooted on the substrate, perfect for soft and shaded areas

  • Fragile structure, best tied or wedged between other plants

  • Ideal for shrimp, timid fish, and low-tech aquascapes

  • Does not require CO₂ or heavy fertilization

  • Sterile Tropica 1-2-Grow! cultivation, safe for all tank inhabitants

  • Excellent for foreground use or as natural shelter

How to use:

  1. Gently remove the plant from the 1-2-Grow! container and rinse under tap water to remove the nutrient gel.

  2. Divide the plant into 6–8 small portions using sharp scissors.

  3. Tie or place the portions on rocks or between other plants using tweezers or fishing line.

  4. Allow it to root and grow slowly, avoiding strong water currents in early stages.

Why choose Monosolenium tenerum 1-2-Grow!:

Visually appealing and easy to maintain, Monosolenium tenerum is perfect for aquarists looking for a Riccia alternative or a soft carpeting effect. Its slow growth and adaptability to moderate lighting make it suitable for beginners and advanced aquascapers alike. It also serves as excellent habitat for shrimp and beneficial microfauna.
