Proscapers often use special substrates (soils) that are more suited to their needs. Unlike "normal" substrates (sands and gravels for example), soils are not water-neutral (allophane). They soften the water and acidify it enough to raise the pH into the ideal acidity range.
JBL soils are rich in nutrients and provide plants with both nutrients and minerals, while shrimp soils are nutrient-free.
