This program provides the carbohydrates, vitamins and amino acids that support the metabolic processes of corals.
Most corals in reef aquariums are considered photosynthetic as they receive the majority of their energy needs from the photosynthetic symbiotic algae zooxanthellae.
In nature, these corals collect approximately 85% of their energy from zooxanthellae, and produce the remaining 15% of their needs from metabolization by tissues that absorb nutrients that are present in the water.
It is therefore essential to provide a balanced mix of carbohydrates, vitamins and amino acids and fats to meet the energy requirements of the coral. The quantity required depends on the type of corals.
The nutritional needs of SPS corals, in particular, depend on the levels of algae nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) available in the water.
In systems with reduced amounts of nutrients (for example, when using Red Sea NO3:PO4-X), the amount of energy that corals receive from zoxanthellae is significantly reduced, therefore, higher levels of nutrients are needed for corals to satisfy its energy demands.
