LILAEOPSIS MAURITIANA – Foreground Tropical Carpet Plant for Aquariums
Lilaeopsis mauritiana is a compact carpeting plant ideal for creating natural, low-growing “grass” effects in the foreground of freshwater aquariums. Discovered in 1992 in Mauritius by Tropica founder Holger Windeløv, this variety is known for its adaptability to lighting and dense growth pattern, making it perfect for smaller tanks or minimalist aquascapes.
Compared to Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, it requires slightly less light while maintaining a height of just 5–10 cm. The plant’s height and leaf spacing vary with light intensity: the more light it receives, the lower and denser it grows. It spreads through runners that propagate across the substrate, gradually forming a lush green carpet.
Lilaeopsis mauritiana is easy to plant and maintain, and pairs beautifully with rocks, driftwood, and other foreground plants. It’s completely safe for fish, shrimp, and invertebrates, and is especially suitable for shrimp tanks or nature-style aquariums.
