MAGNESIUM TEST
MARINE AQUARIUM
Keeping the tests easy to use was a big concern for us, and our chemists were able to get the calcium test right in just two steps. Having clear color changes in the titration was also key, to help eliminate user confusion as to whether they were reading the test accurately.
Each test uses a two-part chemical reaction and a syringe to add water until the final color is achieved. 50 calcium tests are supplied in the box.
In theory we are using the same ideas as the Ca test. The chemical solution here is very sensitive to pH and therefore a strong buffer is needed.
Not like the Ca test, our challenge here is to sense the Ca first and then find the Mg levels. Our way of testing Mg is slightly different and is based on direct titration where we add seawater to the chemical solution.
MAGNESIUM TEST INSTRUCTIONS - Just 2 Steps
It is recommended to perform the calcium test first.
1. Using the 3 ml syringe, add 2 ml of Mg-1 to the test vial.
2. Add a 0.15 ml flat scoop of Mg-2 powder to the test vial and shake.
• The solution should look like this:
3. Using the 1 ml syringe, firmly place the plastic tip and draw up the aquarium water until the bottom end of the black rubber of the syringe is exactly at the 1.00 ml mark. Before this step, make sure that the plastic tip is empty of liquid and is immersed in the water at all times to prevent air from entering the syringe.
• A layer of air between the liquid and the black part of the syringe is normal and will not affect the result. (The normal air layer you should see is equal to 0.1 ml.)
4. Start adding aquarium water to the test vial one drop at a time, swirling slightly after each drop until the solution looks like this:
Caution: Before using the test vial, make sure it is washed with RO water only and dry it with soft paper.
• If the solution in the test vial does not reach this color and you have used all the aquarium water in the syringe, go back to step 3 (this means the magnesium concentration is less than 970 ppm).
• If after adding another 1.00 ml of water a second time the color is not changed, this means the magnesium concentration is less than 360 ppm.
The fastest test can be achieved without the plastic tip with a potential error of 2%.
5. Note the position of the black bottom of the syringe (each division corresponds to 0.01 ml) and obtain the magnesium concentration from Table 1. The readings should be taken at the position of the lower end of the black rubber of the syringe.
• If you need to return to step 3 a second time, use Table 2 to obtain the magnesium concentration. Normal concentrations for magnesium are between 1280-1540 ppm (depends on salinity).
The result is accurate when the calcium concentration is between 350-450 ppm. If the calcium concentration is not in this range, you can correct the result from this table:
NSW Magnesium is around 1350. Our recommendation is to keep your aquarium magnesium levels between: 1290-1450 PPM
