ne of the biggest challenges in the modern reef aquarium is maintaining a balanced ratio of calcium to alkalinity.

When we dose buffer (baking soda) our calcium level will decrease slightly and when alkalinity decreases the calcium will increase slightly.

Monitoring alkalinity levels 2-3 times a week is very important as alkalinity will be the hardest to maintain.

Alkalinity is the ability of saltwater to buffer the pH against acids that try to lower it. Typically, natural seawater has an alkalinity level of 7 dKH. And in our aquarium, we would like to have a constant level between 9-11. This value is very dependent on our salt.

Our Royal Nature Advanced Formula Salt or its advanced brother, Ion Balanced Pro Salt, will help you maintain your alkalinity at these levels.

However, the relationship between calcium and alkalinity is important and the numbers need to be balanced for optimal absorption by corals and other life, or we could experiment with raising the alkalinity level beyond the balanced ratio in an attempt to increase coral growth. An alkalinity level of up to 12-14 dKH is considered safe and possibly beneficial for corals. If we need to raise our alkalinity levels, then using our Royal Baking Soda is highly recommended. Since Royal Nature only uses high purity chemicals, we can provide a complete product line for the best and easiest calcium, magnesium and carbonate supplementation.

Adding calcium and alkalinity is important, but lower or higher levels of carbonates will force us to keep an eye on precipitation as this becomes a waste of our calcium and alkalinity dosing efforts.

Low alkalinity can also be one of the factors that disrupt algae growth. Both low and high alkalinity levels can cause calcium to precipitate. Low alkalinity will cause precipitation in the water, while high alkalinity will cause precipitation on heat sources such as heaters and head impellers.
