Phosphates, chemically abbreviated to PO4, are a waste product of fish and invertebrates.

Phosphate is not toxic to fish and therefore is not a problem for their health. Phosphate, like nitrate, is an essential element, but an excess can cause serious problems of algal growth, causing coral suffocation.

It is recommended to keep the PO4 level close to 0 mg/L
