What is Calcium

Calcium is an element that plays a primary role in the balance of marine aquariums; it is in fact essential for the formation of fish bones and the exoskeleton of many invertebrates. It is also essential for the development of calcareous algae.

Why measure it

Calcium plays a fundamental role in many physiological processes of fish. A correct concentration of this element in seawater is necessary for the growth of corals and coralline algae; too low Calcium values slow down the growth of invertebrates and expose the organisms to the risk of disease. The concentration of Calcium should be maintained between 400 and 450 mg/L; in aquariums with only fish, it is possible to limit the value to 350-400 mg/L. The metabolism of algae and corals can quickly consume the Calcium present in the water; it is therefore advisable to check its concentration frequently.

How to do the test

1. Rinse the test tube repeatedly with the water to be analyzed.

2. Fill the test tube with 5 mL of water to be analyzed.

3. Add 5 drops of Ca 1 reagent and shake the test tube for a few seconds.

4. Add a measure of the Ca 2 powder reagent (green container), close the cap and shake the test tube for a few seconds. The solution will turn red-violet.

5. Fit the plastic nozzle on the tip of the syringe, aspirate 1 mL of the Ca 3 reagent and slowly insert it into the test tube until the water sample turns blue. The number of tenths of a mL needed to change the color of the liquid in the test tube will indicate the Calcium content based on the notes in the table on the back of this leaflet. It is also possible to calculate the Calcium content by multiplying

by 500 the number of mL needed to change the color of the liquid in the test tube. Example: 0.80 mL of reagent Ca 3 needed to change the color from red-violet to blue X 500 = 400 mg/L of Calcium.
